Blog 3- Week 3- Sexual Health

Going through menarche or getting my first menstrual cycle---This is a tough one. I think that over all it was a positive experience just simply because I was a really late bloomer and my family was beginning to worry if it was ever going to happen.

Looking back it was also really scary and painful. For a long time it was a running joke in my house and through a lot of my high school that I had a boob job. This was because when I left school for my sophomore summer my chest was as flat as a desk top. Then I bloomed that summer and when I came back for my junior year I was literally a whole new person-if you know what I mean.

I think that girls these days are already growing up way too fast. You have heard that saying “My daughter is 12 going on 21.” I truly believe that so many girls want to be older than they are. I do not have a daughter yet and am not sure if I every will but if I do I think that I as a mother will fear my daughters menarche.

Lisa,

I'm a mother of a 14-year old daughter and your fear was also my greatest fear for her...getting her period too early! One of her friends started her period when she was 9 years old - that's just not fair! They don't have time to be little girls anymore. I personally believe it is the chemicals that are used to perserve food and it doesn't help that our kids today live off of FAST FOOD. But as a mother, I had to face reality and prepare my daughter for a drastic change in her lifestyle and she has handled it like a champion...she takes very good care of herself, especially during that time of the month - it has not slowed her down at all.

I do agree with you. Children are getting their menarche so young these days and they are in now way ready to be women yet. Sometimes I wonder if it has more to do with body fat, hormones in food, etc. or the fact that our society is so sexual. Sex sells here, and I wonder if those signs signal the hormones in children. It is really unfortunate that some girls are missing out on their childhood.
